We thought that the itchy rash might be urticaria and could be due to latex. We wondered what she actually does at work and tried to think of things that could cause asthma in a supermarket canteen. Bananas, kiwi, avocado, mango and walnut can all cross react with Latex and could be an issue.

| Occupational asthma and urticaria are likely. The two do not often occur together, but latex allergy would be a common cause for the combination.

| Hazards: Physical: Heat sources-oil/gas/electric/non-ionising/sharp utensils-knives etc-cuts
Biological: wound infections/innoculations/contaminations of food products/
Chemical: Washing and cleaning detergents-alleryy to Rubber etc.

| Symptoms only present for 4 years - since working in canteen. Not preparing food fro scratch. Possible causes may include:
Egg proteins
Flour/cerial/pulse dust
soy bean
Isocyanates - some types of plastic wrap when heated
Certain disinfectants that react with proteins. |

| Her respiratory symptoms have been ongoing for 4 years, bad enough to need chest physician referral from previous August, when working at checkout - therefore handling food at that time, incl fruit and veg, as well as being exposed to atmosphere inside supermarket. Presumably worked at a distance from any supermarket bakers so flour sensitivity unlikely. Previous warehouse and supermarket exposure to fruit and veg. potentially a source of sensitisation (as well as domestic exposure). Skin symptom timing seems to parallel that of chest symptoms. ? latex-type OA (cross-recativity to bananas, kiwi, avocado, chestnut) |

| I am concerned first about latex allergy, possibly via marigold gloves, giving a contact dermatitis and occupational lung disease-probably asthma as symptoms worsen and improve over such a short space of time. Other thoughts include irritants or sensitisers in the cleaning fluid used to wipe tables.

She is likely to come into contact with a wide variety of cleaning substances etc at work.
Which vegetables is she chopping at work. Given it is a UK supermarket they are unlikely to be "exotic"!
Does she come into contact with different vegetables at work than at home?
Presumably the switch to supervisor was partly a workplace ajustment after her difficulties were apparent. |
